SHORT
HISTORY
of the African Collections
and African Exhibitions in the Náprstek Museum
by
Dr.J.Kandert
The early history of the Náprstek Museum's African collections
is linked with three names, one of which is still today
the Czech synonym for exploration, the other epitomises
major discoveries as well as, ironically, almost total
oblivion, and the third one gave the museum its name. Emil
Holub (1847 - 1902) brought to the museum its very first
African collections in 1879, following systematic fieldwork
between 1872 and 1877, gathering material on the territories
of today's Republic of South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and
Zimbabwe.

FRANTIŠEK
ŘEHOŘ
and his Collection of Photographs from Halič
In
1999 we are marking the centenary of the death of a man
whose name is today known to only a small group of scholars;
and yet, in his own time, in the 19th century,
he was instrumental in familiarizing the Czech public at
large with the life and culture of the Ukrainian population
of eastern Galicia. His manifold activities earned him
the repute of a moving spirit behind the development of
Czecho-Ukrainian relations in the 1880s and ´90s.
